WANJ SPEARHEADS UPCOMING FUND RAISING CAMPAIGN FOR WASHINGTON

HEADQUARTERS MUSEUM AT MORRISTOWN NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

A number of Morristown area residents gathered recently at the home of Honorable Peter H. B. Frelinghuysen to hear details of an upcoming Washington Association of New Jersey fund raising campaign. On Sunday, June 12, the Association held the first of many area events to inform the public about the exhibits and additional facilities to be located within the newly renovated and expanded Washington?s Headquarters museum at Morristown National Historical Park.

The museum building, which stands behind Washington?s Headquarters, was designed in 1935 by John Russell Pope, the period?s most important museum architect (National Gallery, Washington D.C.). The federal government did not complete the building due to the financial constraints of the Great Depression, and most of the museum?s spectacular collection of approximately 600,000 historical artifacts, documents, books, and works of art have never been displayed. This vast collection also evokes the grandeur of Mount Vernon and George Washington's written legacy at the Library of Congress.

When the new museum wing is completed, school children and adult visitors will be invited to learn about the prominence of Washington in our state during the American Revolution and the great role that Morristown and New Jersey played in securing a free and independent nation for the American people. New display areas will allow for rotating exhibits from the museum?s collection and enhance the ability to host outstanding traveling exhibits. The new museum also will be a cornerstone of the project known as ?New Jersey - The Crossroads of the Revolution,? which will link the major revolutionary historic sites in New Jersey. These improvements will put Morristown and New Jersey on the historic map, creating a national magnet for tourism in the area, as well as increasing the knowledge of the public.

The Washington Association is the Congressionally-legislated partner of the National Park Service, which operates Morristown National Historical Park, including Washington?s Headquarters, the museum, as well as Jockey Hollow. Through the support of Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, the project received federal appropriations of $5 million. The Washington Association has pledged to raise $3.5 million for the first phase of a major capital campaign. Many local partners of national sites and parks throughout the country are engaged in similar projects.
